What a great night at the Bearcat Theater with their show Finding Nemo Jr! Mr. Hanaway put on an amazing show with our UTMS students as well as the elementary students! If you were not able to make it tonight, you have two more chances, Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. Come on out and support our students and see a great show!

Who remembers the Pythagorean Theorem? It is the one that always sticks out in my mind. A^2 +B^2= C^2, you remember it now don’t you? Today in Mrs. Elliott’s class, the students were taught about the Greek mathematician and learned that his theorem was not proven until after his death. The students then learned about the theorem and how to use it. They finished the class by practicing finding either the leg values or the hypotenuse using the theorem. Thank you Mrs. Elliott for teaching our students!

Yesterday the 8th grade students in Mr. Harnew's Honors Social Studies class went to Indianapolis to compete in the We the People competition. The We the People requires students to write information essays on citizenship, constitutional history, and constitutional powers of government. The students competed virtually in the Southwest Indiana Regional We the People competition. UTMS placed in the top 3 for middle school teams which allowed them to qualify for the Indiana State We the People competition. This is the second year UTMS has qualified for the state competition. Congratulations to our hard working UTMS students and Mr. Harnew as well!

Do you know how gummy worms and orbeez are made? If you were in Mrs Boender’s 8th grade science class you would. The students learned about synthetic materials and what happens when different materials are mixed together. After the students learned about synthetic materials, Mrs. Boender had the students do a very interesting lab where they mixed calcium chloride and sodium alginate to create both gummies and orbeez. After creating these items, the students recorded their observations with their lab groups and also answered a series of questions about the materials. Thank you so much for the fun activity and teaching our students!

Persuading others to believe that your opinion is better than someone else's can be a challenging task. Now, what if you had to persuade others when you do not know the topic? Can you do it? In Mrs. Buerhle’s class the students did an activity where they had to pick a random card that had a real or fictional person or animals, such as Chuck Norris, The Marshmallow Man, and French Bulldogs. The students then had to draw another two random cards that gave traits that the person has. What makes this challenging is, these traits might not relate to that person. One student would go against another student and give argumentative reasons why their person is better than the others using the traits they have drawn. The students then voted on which one was the best. This is a great lead up to help get the students ready for the argumentative writing part of her class! Thank you so much for the fun activity and teaching our students!

Who has memories of watching the Macy’sThanksgiving Day Parade? Watching all different floats and balloons with all the creativity that goes into them has been a tradition for families for years. While spending the day in Mrs. Sullivan’s class, the students will be creating their own floats. The catch is this, it must be made out of recycled materials such as shoeboxes, plastic bottles, newspapers, paper towel rolls, and old decorating items. The students will use problem solving skills, creative thinking, and group dynamics to create a float with the theme #blessed. The float will represent something that they are blessed to have in their lives. During the week of Thanksgiving, in class, they will construct these floats and when we return from break they will be displayed and judged. If you have any of these items listed and want to donate them for the project, please send them our way and we will make sure Mrs. Sullivan gets them! Thank you so much for the fun project and teaching our students!

Do you remember Roy G Biv? If so, do you know where it belongs on the electromagnetic spectrum? If you were in Mrs. Klimczak’s 6th grade science class, you would know all these answers! The students were also learning what waves do and how they are used in radars, microwave ovens, and scanners. The students also received the opportunity to draw their own electromagnetic waves on paper along with a couple fun learning activities such as matching and sequence games using the different waves. Thank you so much for the great lesson and teaching our students!

Our first Teacher Spotlight for UTMS is Senora Kincaid. She does an amazing job teaching Spanish to both the high school and middle school students. She is also the Student Council Director for UTMS. On 11/2, I got the pleasure to stop by one of her meetings and the students were reading essays written by each other for our upcoming Veterans Day Program. The student would read them and then vote on the best one from each grade. The students were enjoying the essays and were having great discussions about each. To make things even better, she bought pizza for all the students in the meeting. Thank you so much for what you do for our students!
