UTSC Background Check Processing

Level 1 Background Checks for Volunteer School Events, Classroom Helpers, Day Field Trip Chaperones

Level 1 Background Checks are required for any volunteer participating in a UTSC-sponsored in-school activities, day field-trips, classroom volunteer opportunities, or other school-based events. These checks are processed through the school office and involve completing a simple paper form and are free to the volunteer. Level 1 checks utilize the Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History Search.

To complete the process:

1. Print and fill out the form linked below, or request a copy from your school's office.

2. Return the completed form to your child’s building secretary, or submit it directly via email to your child's secretary. Once your background check has been processed, the school will notify you when you're cleared to volunteer.

3. As a parent volunteer, please note that an updated check is required as your child transitions from elementary to middle to high school.

If you do not hear from your school in a timely manner regarding your background check, please contact the school's main office.

Level 2 Background Checks for Chaperones of Overnight Trips

Level 2 background check is required for volunteers participating in any UTSC-sponsored overnight activities. This check is conducted through the Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History Search. This process is free to chaperones. This is the same process as the Level 1 check however must be repeated annually before each overnight trip.

To complete the process:

1. Print and fill out the form linked below, or request a copy from your school's office.

2. Return the completed form to your child’s building secretary, or submit it directly via email to your child's secretary.

3. Once your information has been reviewed and no alerts or discrepancies are found, you will be cleared for all Level 1 volunteer activities as well as overnight trips. If the check requires further information through the Safe Hiring Solutions check, then the cost of the check is on the volunteer.

If you do not hear from your school in a timely manner regarding your background check, please contact the school's main office.

Level 3 Background Checks for Employment and Volunteer Coaches

Level 3 background checks will be used when a person is requesting consideration for employment or a volunteer coaching position. Level 3 checks will utilize the online Safe Hiring Solutions Portal for an expanded criminal history search. If a person's information is run through Safe Hiring Solutions and no alerts or discrepancies return, that person is cleared for UTSC employment, volunteer coaching and/or all Level 1 and Level 2 Volunteer-approved activities. The cost for the Level 3 check is the responsibility of the applicant.

To complete the process:

1. Go to the link below, pay the fee and complete the information to begin the process.

2. This is a two part process, please check your email for the second part.

3. If a person's information is run through Safe Hiring Solutions and no alerts or discrepancies return, that person is cleared for UTSC employment, volunteer coaching and/or all Level 1 and Level 2 Volunteer-approved activities.
